Who Frill Is
Player:
Gender: Nonbinary.
Manner: Cautious but inquisitive.
Goal: To satisfy their curiosity.
Backstory: The fire of curiosity burns strongly inside Frill. They are fascinated by magic, technology, and, especially, magical technology. Frill is the happiest when they are taking something apart to see how it works. Unfortunately they do that regardless of who owns the thing they are dismantling. They always try to put it back together, but when that doesn’t go well things get tricky. It’s a good thing that they are lucky.
Behavior: Like most small creatures, caution is an important part of Frill’s life. Caution keeps them safe. However, any time that caution competes with curiosity, curiosity always wins. They regularly fly, climb, and sneak into places where they aren’t supposed to be, just to find out what is there. Curiosity also frequently leads Frill to ask questions of people who are better off left alone.
Intense Focus: Frill has an amazing ability to focus on the things they are interested in. The challenge is that it is hard for them to focus on things that don’t interest them. As a result, they frequently forget things and lose objects. Their intense focus also means that they are rarely aware of the passage of time and are often late. This experience is represented by the Focusing mechanic that is in the next section.
Appearance: Frill is bat-like creature with violet purple fur, a blue tail, and a ring of red spikes around their neck. Their body is one foot long with a four foot wingspan. In the middle of each wing is hand with two fingers and one thumb. They wear a yellow chest harness that is covered in pouches and tools.

Species Trait—Flight: Frill has wings and can use them to fly.
Physical Defense—Dodging: You are trained to use dodging for physical defense. The aesthetics of this dodging are up to you. However you are only able to dodge in situations where you have the freedom to move. This means that any time you are squeezing through a tight space, are balanced precariously, or are restrained, you cannot dodge.
Mental Defense—Deflection: You are trained to use deflection for mental defense. Deflection is the process of using special gestures to alter the way magic moves so that it avoids you. The aesthetics of this deflection are up to you. However doing this requires large physical gestures, so you are only able to use deflection in situations where you have the freedom to move. This means that any time you are squeezing through a tight space, are balanced precariously, or are restrained, you cannot deflect.

Ability #1—Fire Magic: You can create magical effects with fire and light. Examples of effects that you can make are magical illumination, dazzling lights, walls of fire, fire breath, flaming weapons, and fireballs. You can also do things like resist harm from fire, sense fire, melt things, burn things up, put out fire, and create darkness. Fire Magic is used by rolling mind and you are trained in it.
Ability #2—Attunement to Fire Magic: You have a special connection to Fire Magic that is expressed as an immunity and two minor magical effects. The minor magical effects can be used without risk of failure, which means that no roll is needed to use them. However, if you incorporate a minor magical effect into a more complicated action, you will need to roll to accomplish that action. These minor magical effects wear off at a story appropriate time, usually at the end of a scene. When the effect does wear off, non-magical outcomes, like healing and harm, remain.
- Immunity: Fire.
- Minor Magical Effect: Make a magical light that hovers near you.
- Minor Magical Effect: Light a small flame in your hand or on another body part of your choice.

This is any machine powered by magic that uses mechanical parts like gears, levers, and pulleys to do things. You are particularly good at this specialty and are always considered prepared when using it.
Focusing: To represent Frill’s intense focus, Frill can ignore distractions when they are doing something that interests them. However when Frill is attempting to do a sustained activity that bores them, roll a six-sided die to determine whether or not they are able to stay focused on that activity.
- 4-6 Distraction: Frill does the activity for a little while, but then gets distracted and does something else instead.
- 1-3 Sustained Focus: Frill manages to stay focused on the task.
