Who Chandra Is
Player:
Name Pronunciation: CHAN-dra WIL-ymz
Gender: Woman.
Manner: Vigilant.
Goal: To defend.
Backstory: Chandra’s homeland is a place of war. It wasn’t always this way, but a long drought pushed the existing tensions to the breaking point. In the ensuing conflict Chandra became one of the defenders of a refugee group. It has been hard, but she has held firm to her belief that she could protect without killing. Now this group has crossed over into a land that is at peace. But despite all of the abundance and diversity around them, it hasn’t been easy finding a place in this new land.
Her Struggle: Having spent so much time as a warrior and protector, Chandra is now struggling to find her place in a land that is at peace. She wants to protect her group, but it is hard to figure out what that means if it isn’t physical protection. Recently she has turned to adventuring as a way of earning money and good will for her group.
Hypervigilance: Chandra is nearly always in a state of high alert where she constantly scans the environment for threats. This makes her jumpy and she reacts strongly to unexpected or loud noises. As a consequence, crowded and noisy places make her agitated. In addition, being in a new land means that it is harder assess whether a perceived threat is real. Finally, hypervigilance is exhausting, but it also makes it harder to sleep. This experience is represented by the Hypervigilance mechanic that is in the next section.
Appearance: Chandra is a large muscular anthropomorphic elephant. She stands upright at eight and a half feet tall, with an elephant head, human hands, elephant-like feet, and gray skin. Chandra carries a staff made of a deep blue-black wood and wears a mail shirt that comes down to mid-thigh, with protective guards strapped to her legs. Midnight blue fabric can be seen underneath her armor.

Ability #1—Nonlethal Training: You have been trained in nonlethal fighting techniques and know how to avoid causing unintentional harm. Any time that you are fighting an opponent in a nonlethal manner, any combat action that you fail will not cause significant harm to that opponent.
Fighting in a nonlethal manner covers any combat action intended to gain an advantage over an opponent without physically harming them. Examples of nonlethal fighting are disarming a combatant, pinning clothing to a solid object, damaging armor, knocking a foe down, restricting an opponent’s range of motion, pushing an opponent into a less advantageous position, and putting someone into a wresting hold or pin.
Ability #2—Nonlethal Expert: You are skilled at using a wide range of nonlethal techniques for gaining combat advantage and incapacitating opponents. Three times a day, you are considered prepared when you use the Acrobatics, Athletics, Flying, Melee Combat, Ranged Combat, Swimming, or Unarmed Fighting skills for an action that is intended to gain a combat advantage over an opponent without physically harming them. Examples of nonlethal actions are disarming a combatant, pinning clothing to a solid object, damaging armor, knocking a foe down, restricting an opponent’s range of motion, pushing an opponent into a less advantageous position, and putting someone into a wresting hold or pin. You may take this ability twice if you desire.
Ability #3—Specialized Weapon: You own and are trained in the use of a one-of-a-kind weapon that grants you two special advantages. This weapon is made of a special, magic-infused material that can’t be damaged by ordinary means (either physical or magical). Your two special advantages for this weapon are given below, along with an additional enchantment that has been placed on it.
- Breaks Stone: Your staff is made of a magical wood that is so hard that it can break hard substances like ordinary stone and metal.
- Comes When Called: Your weapon has been magically bonded to you so that it comes to your hand any time you speak or sign a magic word.
- Enchanted Defensive Item: Your staff has been enchanted so that it boosts your mental defense. Three times a day, you can call on the magic in this staff to be prepared when using your mental defense.
Ability #4—Strong as an Ox: You are extremely strong. Three times a day, you are considered prepared when you use the Athletics, Climbing, Flying, Riding, or Swimming skills. You may take this ability twice if you desire.
Hypervigilance: To represent Chandra’s experience of hypervigilance, when Chandra is in a crowded or noisy environment, she takes a one die penalty to Awareness Skills (Insight, Perception, Survival). However when Chandra is in a quiet or familiar environment, people cannot sneak up on her without the use of magic.
