Who Kai Is
Player:
Name Pronunciation: kah-ee
Gender: Nonbinary.
Manner: Awkward.
Goal: To protect.
Backstory: Kai grew up on a small kelp farm in the coastal waters of the southern Circular Sea. When the pirate Alex Barrow stole the Storm God’s Staff and wreaked havoc across the entire coastline, Kai knew that they had to do something. But when Kai’s first attempt to defeat Alex Barrow failed, they realized that they needed help. So Kai turned to the Deity of Fate and prayed for their assistance. Now Kai is a victorious hero and the Champion of Fate. But as they tour the land and ocean, reluctantly making speeches and meeting people, they realize how complicated it can be to have your prayers answered.
Social Anxiety: While they may be strong and determined when facing physical dangers, any time that Kai needs to talk to strangers, they struggle and stumble over their words. They get anxious and this makes them awkward. Public speaking is difficult for them and they avoid it whenever they can.
Getting Around on Land: When Kai is on land they use a manual wheelchair to get around. This wheelchair is specifically designed to have sufficient space and support for a merperson’s tail.
Appearance: Kai is a muscular merperson with golden-brown skin and long curly hair that shades from black to a vibrant cobalt blue. Their fish tail has matching cobalt blue scales with serrated black-tipped fins running along the top and bottom of their tail. Kai also has intricate black tattoos across their left should and arm. They wear a simple, green chest wrap made of woven kelp fibers. On land they use a sporty wheelchair made of wood and bronze.
Relationships:
What Kai Can Do
Class: Cleric.
Body #: 4
Mind #: 4
Species: Merfolk.
Species Trait—Amphibious: You are able breathe both air and water and can easily transition between being on land and in water. All of your gear is waterproof and is designed to function in both air and water.
Species Trait—Additional Sense (Echolocation): You have a sense that most species do not have. This sense gives you information that others without it don’t have. Within its limitations, you can use your additional sense to gain sense-specific information from awareness skills.
Kai has echolocation that allows them to use sound to perceive the location, size, shape, speed, and movement of the things around them. Their perception is more precise the closer they are, but underwater they can perceive things up to half a mile away. On land they can only perceive nearby things. In order to use echolocation, Kai must produce loud, high-frequency clicks.
Physical Defense—Shield: You are trained to use a shield for physical defense. This can be any type of shield from your culture. You own a shield and you can use this training any time that you are holding it. However your shield requires one hand to use, so you cannot do any two-handed tasks while using it. In addition, your shield can be taken away by disarming attacks.
Mental Defense—Deflection: You are trained to use deflection for mental defense. Deflection is the process of using special gestures to alter the way magic moves so that it avoids you. The aesthetics of this deflection are up to you. However doing this requires large physical gestures, so you are only able to use deflection in situations where you have the freedom to move. This means that any time you are squeezing through a tight space, are balanced precariously, or are restrained, you cannot deflect.

Divine Connection—Holy Symbol: You connect to your deity through their holy symbol. A holy symbol is a special symbol that represents your deity. You have your deity’s holy symbol as a symbolic object. In order to cast spells, you must actively touch this holy symbol. Kai’s holy symbol is a black pearl that they wear on a bracelet. It is large and round, with iridescent blue, green, and purple hues on a surface that is rippled like water.
Deity: The nonbinary deity of Mystery, Dreams, and Fate.
Ability #1—Protection Magic: You can create magical effects that protect against harm. Protection Magic allows you to put up barriers that block physical harm, such as stone walls or spheres of magical force, and barriers that block magical effects, such as shields that defend against mind and emotion control. In addition, you can create a protected sanctuary to sleep in and make people temporarily impervious to one type of harm, such as fire, cold, lightning, poison, or weapons slashes. Protection Magic also allows you to detect immediate hazards, like traps and poisons, and defend people from environmental hazards, such as extreme weather, quicksand, and sticky webs. Finally, you can use Protection Magic to reduce or remove others’ magical protections. This magic is used by rolling mind and you are trained in it.
Ability #2—Supernatural Brawn: Your deity’s power fills you with a supernatural power which enhances your strength and endurance. Any time you are taking an action using the Athletics, Climbing, Flying, Riding, or Swimming skills, you may call on this power to exceed the bounds of ordinary possibility. For example, you can outrun a greyhound, lift a portcullis, jump from the ground to the roof of a one-story building, climb a rock face in seconds, fly through a hurricane, and swim so powerfully that you can tow a ship. This is a magical ability, so it will go awry on failed rolls.
Ability #3—Strong as an Ox: You are extremely strong. Three times a day, you are considered prepared when you use the Athletics, Climbing, Flying, Riding, or Swimming skills. You may take this ability twice if you desire.
Ability #4—Extra Species Trait: You have manifested an additional species trait. This means that Kai has two species traits instead of one.
Social Anxiety: To represent Kai’s social anxiety, whenever Kai has to speak to an audience that includes five or more strangers, social skill rolls that result in a full success (two successes) instead become a partial success (one success).
